The SODIUM BENTONITE, a clay mineral of the “phyllosilicate” family, composed, to a large extent of montmorillonite, calcium and sodium, is a decomposition product of volcanic ashes characterized by a peculiar “lamellar” crystalline structure defined by an elementary particle of montmorillonite. Each plate has a uniform distribution of negative charges on the external surface. The plates are gathered in packets thanks to the electrostatic action that occurs between the cations (Na +, Ca ++, K +, H +) that can be interposed between the plates and the distribution of negative charges on the surface of the plates themselves. The prevalence of a cation compared to the others determines the characteristics of the bentonite. In calcium bentonite the prevalent cations are of the Ca ++ type, in sodium bentonite the prevalent cations are of the Na + type, in the acid bentonite the H + cations prevail. Sodium bentonite is particularly important in buildings due to its permanent active characteristic of absorbing water, expanding up to 12-16 times compared to its anhydrous volume, which makes it ideal for producing sheets, panels, rolls and self-sealing profiles, for waterproofing of walls against ground.
CLAYGRAIN represents the functional and versatile accessory. Mixed with sand and water or only with water, it can be used in the form of glue mortar, to seal any weak points in the concrete structure, before backfilling with sand.
Claygrain
Claygrain is a dissolved, anhydrous sodium bentonite powder, characterised by a montmorillonite content in excess of 95%, with low yield-point (proof). The product should be used as it is, to increase the amount of bentonite in punctual areas, or mixed with cement and water or just water to obtain a slightly expansive waterproofing mortar, suitable for smoothing any crawl spaces in the concrete prior to laying and refilling the Claytex bentonite sheet.
